Urgent Appointments

5

Urgent appointments are available every day for clinically urgent symptoms, where harm may be caused if you’re not treated within 24 hours. These are telephone calls in the first instance. You may be advised to see a clinician or service who is better placed to help you quickly (see below for more information receiving the right care at the right time).

Call 01666 825825 to book.

Get The Right Care At The Right Time

4

Our patient advisors may signpost you to another service, based on the information that you provide at the time. This may include a minor injuries unit such as Tetbury Minor Injuries and Illness UnitPharmacy FirstCUES (Community Urgent Eye Care Service) or another specialist service that will be able to provide you with the necessary treatment. See more information below.

This does not mean that we’ve exceeded capacity, it means that you will be treated at the right place at the right time and by the right clinician, which is not always a GP.

Clinical Pharmacists

Our Clinical Pharmacists work alongside our GPs to help with medication queries. They're best to speak to regarding medication reviews, discussions on medication side effects, and considering alternatives to current medication.

They also work hard ensuring patients are up to date with their medication monitoring, such as blood tests and blood pressure checks, to ensure all clinicians can safely prescribe repeat medications.

Community Pharmacy

Community Pharmacists work in your local pharmacies, such as Malmesbury Pharmacy, Boots and Cohens.

Pharmacists can suggest treatments that do not need a prescription for a range of conditions.

Most pharmacies can also offer prescription medicine for some conditions, without you needing to see a GP or make an appointment. This is called Pharmacy First.

Conditions they can offer prescription medicine for are:

  • impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
  • infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
  • earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
  • sore throat (aged 5 years and over)
  • sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
  • urinary tract infections (UTIs) (women aged 16 to 64 years)
  • shingles (aged 18 years and over)
Specialist Practitioners

Our Specialist Practitioners are Paramedics who've completed additional training to support General Practice. You may be booked in to see them if you are experiencing a minor illness, such as a chest infection, tonsillitis or ear infection.

One of their main roles is to undertake home visits where traditionally the doctors would have gone. The SP is able to assess and treat the majority of home visits equally if not better than a GP . They also have the benefit of technical equipment not normally carried by a GP.

Please note - our Specialist Practitioners work to a rota and are not emergency/ambulance paramedics. For urgent medical care that requires a Paramedic please call 111 or 999 as appropriate.

Nurses and HCAs

Our team of Nurses and Healthcare Assistants carry out many types of appointment including:

  • Blood tests
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Immunisations and vaccines
  • Wound care and dressings
  • Cervical smears
  • Diabetic foot checks

We have specialist nurses in Diabetes and Respiratory Conditions, who may be best placed to help you than a GP.

Tetbury Minor Illness Service

When you contact the surgery, our Patient Advisers may direct you to Tetbury Minor Injury and Illness service. This is because you'll be seen, treated, and (if needed) prescribed medication quicker than waiting to see/speak to a GP.

Suitable if you are experiencing a minor illness or injury, such as:

  • Cough/symptoms of a chest infection
  • Sore throat
  • Ear ache
  • Minor cuts and lacerations, including infected wounds
  • Animal bites
  • Bruises
  • Strains and sprains
  • Simple fractures and dislocations

This is a walk-in service, you can attend from 8:30am - 5:30pm Monday - Friday.

MIU and A+E

Our team of Patient Advisers are trained in recognising 'red flag' symptoms, and so may refer you to an MIU or A+E department if they feel your symptoms are too severe or urgent to be managed by a GP.

You might be directed to MIU if you have:

  • A new injury
  • Possible sprains/fractures/breaks
  • Injuries, cuts and bruises

You might be directed to A+E or to call an ambulance if you have:

  • Symptoms of a heart attack (including chest pain, difficulties breathing)
  • Symptoms of a stroke (including one sided weakness, new/sudden confusion)
  • Severe allergic reaction (including tongue swelling or throat closing up)
  • Difficulty breathing (including not being able to speak in full sentences)
  • Symptoms of sepsis (including fever, racing heart, new/sudden confusion)
Physiotherapists

If you're over 18 years old and experiencing issues with:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Spinal conditions and post-surgery rehabilitation
  • Osteoarthritis, fractures, and joint replacements
  • Knee, hip, ankle, and shoulder pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Frozen shoulder and tennis elbow
  • Amputee rehabilitation
  • Post-operative recovery

you can now self-refer to a physiotherapist without having to wait to see a GP, speeding up the process. Our team may direct you to self-refer to physiotherapy if it's appropriate for your symptoms.

You can also self-refer by clicking here.

Podiatrists

If you're over 18 and experiencing foot problems, such as ingrowing toenails/nail care, poor circulation/loss of sensation, or musculoskeletal pain, you can now self-refer for podiatry without needing to speak to a GP first, speeding up the process.

The Podiatry Service provides specialist foot care across Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire (BSW). Our team of highly skilled podiatrists, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), offers expert assessment, treatment, and support to maintain foot health and prevent complications.

Our team may advise you to self-refer to podiatry, or you can do so by clicking here.

Urgent Eye Care

GPs are limited when it comes to examining eyes, as they do not have the specialist equipment to look into/behind the eye. You can now receive NHS treatment for urgent eye care matters from a local optician, using CUES (The Community Urgent Eyecare Service).

CUES provides urgent assessment, treatment or referral for sudden onset eye problems such as flashes, floaters, vision loss or minor eye injuries. You can contact them by calling 0300 303 4922.
